There is nothing like the light and air at Lake Como. In the mornings it is fresh and clear and the sun glistens like diamonds on the water. For most, travel around the lake is by boat, where the glamorous skim elegantly through the waters in classic wooden Riva’s, the flawless mahogany gleaming in the sunlight. Sleek, white cruisers carry the young and the rich, while tourists file aboard the ferries that carry them from town to town, capturing the spectacular villas and classic sights along the water’s edge. But for the most part, the sheer beauty of this lake demands slow living. Hours slipping by in contented bliss, sitting at small mosaic tables, with local wines and simple stuzzichini, as afternoons slip gently into dusk. It is hard to leave this place and if you are like us, it will stay in your heart forever.

I love those meandering walks that surprise you with hidden gems, like a museum, a great bar, an artisan market or a laneway full of shops. On this particular day, the surprise was a picture-perfect glimpse of boats in Manly Harbour, framed between two houses. It was a view that could have easily passed for the Mediterranean.

The small towns nestled along the shoreline of Lake Como feel like an impossibility. Varenna, the one we chose, is a ridiculously picturesque village with a warren of pathways and weathered stone steps that spill down toward the lake. Cobbled streets, charming churches and elegant villas, and an ancient hilltop castle that watches over it all.

This gorgeous little shop, Bohemian Sundays, is nestled on the corner beside a cafe, where relaxed locals and visitors sit and enjoy the chilled vibe of the village. As they say themselves, it’s a place to “Discover where your inner gypsy can dance.” I just love that!
